There are lots of ways to cleanse crystals – it pretty much comes down to whatever is convenient for you at a given moment. It’s important to cleanse your crystals so you can reinforce their properties and programming. If you feel that your crystal has stopped working, it may be time for a cleanse.
You can cleanse your crystals as often as necessary or possible. I have recommended time periods for some methods of cleansing, but you will intuitively know when your crystals are cleansed.
Below are 12 ways to cleanse your crystals that have always worked for me. Please note that there are many additional ways not mentioned here – these are methods that I use frequently.
Sunlight
Leave your crystals on a windowsill or near a window from sunrise to sunset. Make sure it is a clear day, with not much of cloud cover. The crystals will need to be exposed to the solar rays for at least 4 hours, though they don’t have to be in direct sunlight. This method will not be as effective if it’s a very cloudy or rainy day.
This is the easiest way to cleanse your crystals since sunlight is abundant almost anywhere (unless you live very close to the poles, sorry!). This method could fade some of your crystals over time, so use it sparingly.
Moonlight
Personally, I find this method to be the most potent. The moonlight not only cleanses your crystal, but empowers it as well. Leave your crystals out on a window sill or very close to a window overnight during a full moon. You can use this method up to a day before and after full moon day.
I have found that my crystals are very powerful even if it’s a cloudy or rainy night. If you feel that your crystals need more cleansing, leave them out in the sunlight the following day as well.

Candlelight
Light a candle and set your crystals around the candle. The goal is to get the candlelight to reflect off the crystals for a minimum of 4 hours, or until your crystals feel clear. Use a purifying candle with soy wax or bees wax (not paraffin wax).
Depending on the size of your candle you may only be able to cleanse a few crystals at a time. You can also use part candlelight and part sunlight if it’s a cloudy day or your candle is small.
White Light
Hold your crystal in your hands or set your crystal down in front of you. Picture a white ball of light in front of you. Imagine this light enveloping your crystal. When your crystal is cleansed, you will intuitively feel a glowing light emanate from your crystal.
This method can take anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on the intensity and focus of your visualization. This method takes a little practice, but is a very handy skill to have when you have perfected it.
Tip: Do this with one crystal at a time, two or three if you are advanced. You want to make sure each individual crystal is fully cleansed. If you do many at a time, it’ll be hard to know which ones are cleansed and which ones need more cleansing.
Amethyst
You will need raw amethyst – like a geode, not a tumbled stone. Lay your crystals around the amethyst – make sure each crystal is touching the raw amethyst, even if it’s lightly touching. You can also put your crystals on top of the raw amethyst, if possible.
The bigger your amethyst, the more crystals you can cleanse at once. There is no time limit here, leave it for as much or as little time as you need.
Tip: Get the flatter geodes as opposed to the circular ones. This way you can lay out more crystals around the raw amethyst and some crystals on top as well.
Selenite
Selenite is an absolute must-have in your crystal collection. Selenite never needs cleansing and is great for cleansing other crystals. Make sure your crystals are touching the selenite. You can also store your crystals in a selenite plate or bowl, which an easy way to cleanse your crystal after every use.

Pendulum – clear quartz, amethyst or selenite
If you have an amethyst or a clear quartz pendulum, you can rotate this around your crystals to cleanse them. Do this for at least 9 rotations and more if you feel that you need to.
Tip: If you don’t have a pendulum, you can tie a string around an amethyst or clear quartz tumble stone and use as a makeshift pendulum.
Natural water
You can also cleanse you crystals in natural water like a river, a spring, the sea, etc. Tap water or reservoirs won’t be very effective – make sure to find a natural body of water.
Mother Earth
You can bury your crystals in the ground or leave the crystals in a potted plant for a few hours. Make sure that the soil is natural earth – not something like mulch or blended potting mix.
Sound
You can use a singing bowl, cymbals, or mantras to cleanse your crystals. There isn’t an exact technique here, just make sure your crystals are close to the point of the emanation of the sound. They need to be exposed to the sound for a few seconds to a few minutes. I also find “AUM” to be a very powerful mantra, so I keep my crystals near me while chanting.
Sage, Palo Santo, Rosemary, or other herbs.
This is the method I use most frequently. Hold your crystals over the smoke of your herbs – the smoke will naturally move towards the crystals. You’ll know when your crystals are cleansed when the smoke starts to move away from them.
Pray over your crystals
Nothing beats the power of a prayer from the heart. Hold your crystals close to you and pray that your crystals are cleansed. You can ask your Angels, your Spirit Guides, the Ascended Masters, or God to cleanse them.
